Rape in War: Motives of Militia in DRC (Jocelyn Kelly)

- UN Security Council Resolution (1820) recognizes sexual violence against women in conflict as a threat to international peace and security

- Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)
- Mai Mai militia group interview

- They consider themselves as protectors of civilians and their nation, while committing crimes
- Magical belief systems combined with Christianity (even using marijuana)
- Regard their commander as 'father,' whose orders must be carried out
- Justify sexual violence as Satan's work
- Those who join military 'ideologically' are less likely to commit crimes since they heavily depend on civilian support
- They distinguish lust rapes from evil rapes (the former is permissible, acceptable but the later is horrible to their standard: but BOTH ARE CRIMES!! that violate human rights)
- Lack of training militia only produces relentless men with arms
